After being embarrassed by a prank at a raucous party, Dr. Falke plots his revenge by inviting the perpetrator, the well-to-do Gabriel Von Eisenstein, to a masked ball thrown by the perpetually bored Prince Orlofsky. Falke also invites Eisenstein's wife Rosalinda and their chambermaid Adele, all of them disguised and unaware of the presence of the others. Throw in Rosalinda's former suitor, a determined prison warden, an incompetent lawyer, a drunken jailer, and lots and lots and lots of champagne, and you have all the elements of a hilarious night at the opera.
