In 1791, Robert, a French revolutionist flees to New Orleans and sells himself as a bond servant to avoid capture.  There he falls in love with the mistress of the house, Marianne. But as he is about to win her heart at a masquerade ball, Robert is discovered by Ribaud, a detective sent from France. Robert is arrested for treason and put aboard the ship  New Moon to face the guillotine. A mutiny on the ship occurs and Robert is named the captain.  He and his crew of stout hearted men sail to the Isle of Pines and  start a new republic.  After many trials and tests of will, Robert and Marianne finally put aside their differences and fall in love.
